WI-PIT

Warm, inviting, and emotionally bonding like an ancient fire pit, cozy and comfortable like a conversation pit - here is the WI-PIT. It is a modular and mobile conversation pit inspired by prehistoric intimacy and a modern symbol of connection (Wi-Fi), aiming to bring people together by disconnecting from artificial realities.

The project started as an exploration of archetypes that shape our expectations about appearance, function, and meaning of objects. What if we break away from existing norms? What can we learn from the past? Pictures of neolithic living sites were the main inspiration as they present some of the oldest furniture pieces. Here, the fire pit in the household plays a central role as a place for family gatherings.

However, with modern technology and social media dominating our lives, communication has taken on a completely different meaning today. Will we be able to maintain genuine connections..? This line of thinking initiated contemplation of objects facilitating real-life conversations and led to the concept of conversation pits. Objects, once changed by a sofa setting, hence reducing interaction between people while focusing on TV.

5 modules can be arranged in a circle to create a conversation pit. The backrests create a border and close people together. These modules can also work as separate parts and combinations, while wheels increase mobility and flexibility. The coverings can be taken down and washed or replaced.

WI-PIT revises the traditional conversation pit, proposes a setting for genuine communication rather than distractions, and encourages people to connect.
